Many optical character recognition (OCR) devices currently use a decision tree algorithm to identify a particular character in a given print font. Different fonts usually require different algorithms, so a versatile OCR device usually either has many algorithms stored in its memory for selection by an operator, or it requires the operator to initial program load its memory (font by font) with the decision program for a particular font by means of some conventional input medium and hardware.
