The amplitude of a readback signal from a transducer is maintained constant by controlling the gain of a variable gain amplifier. The amplitude of the signals of different densities from the variable gain amplifier are normalized by an equalizing circuitry. During an interrecord gap or during data dropout. the gain of the variable gain amplifier is maintained at its last setting.
