A general purpose method of digitizing continuous tone data from an optical scan of photographic or black/white documents for reproduction on either binary displays (e.g., cathode ray tube and gas discharge display devices) or raster plotters (e.g., electrostatic and ink jet plotting devices). The steps for carrying out the scan/digitizing method are as follows: 1. Collect scan data for three consecutive scan lines at a time. 2. At any picture element (pel) position A, its gray level is compared with the average B (calculated) gray level of its surrounding 8 neighbor pels, and the difference (A-B) between them established. 3.
