In plasma display panels, the capacitance between the opposing surfaces of the individual gas cells must be included in the load to be driven. One of the conventional plasma display driving techniques utilizes upper sustain transistors which charge the gas panel capacitance and are driven as floating switches. While this technique works for small panels, there are several impediments to its use in large panels with higher capacitance. For example, a transistor operating as a switch into a large capacitance at high voltage will require a large safe operating area; the fast rise time produced by this technique results in ringing on the sustain waveform which can lower the sustain maximum voltage and thus lower the operating margin of the panel.
