A low energy motor drive system is employed in a typewriter or other machine where considerable machine motor idle conditions exist. The low energy motor drive includes a first motor which is continuously on and which drives a cooling fan and a clutch plate and a second motor, coaxially mounted with the first motor, which is turned on only during machine operations and which is clutched to the first motor shaft to provide start-up power and drive assist.
