Abstract

In the exchange of digital data between a stationary base station and multiple battery-powered portable terminals. over a single time-shared radio frequency channel, the base station will repeatedly transmit poll headers while waiting for inbound data originating from the portable terminals. When a user places one of the portable terminals in a send mode, the terminal responds to the next poll header with a message ready header. If the base station hears and interprets the header, the base station executes the procedures necessary to retrieve the data. Once the transmission is completed, the portable terminal is no longer in a send mode, and succeeding polls are not answered until the user has keyed in new data and placed the unit in send mode.
