Locating the corresponding pins on adjacent circuit boards was previously accomplished by using scales marked with the appropriate XY nomenclature. These scales were applied at the edge of the circuit boards. The operator would visually locate the X coordinate and the Y coordinate, and upon finding the intersecting points, the operator marked it with an oscilloscope probe. The procedure was then repeated with respect to the second circuit card. This method proved to be ineffective because, with both hands occupied holding a probe, adjusting the oscilloscope or mapping the signal through a schematic, the result was that the operator often lost the original XY coordinate.
