An electrochromic display device operates by the controlled electrodeposition of colored material on the display electrodes. It is desirable for good control to provide a reference electrode to sense the potentials at the display electrodes. The reference electrode should be invisible to the viewer but should be as close to each display electrode as possible. For large area matrix displays these requirements have not been satisfied by previous designs.
