In text processing there is a need to store and access a large number of documents on a direct access storage device (DASD). The DASD is divided into permanent storage for storing documents until deleted or archived by an operator, and work storage for creating and modifying documents prior to moving them into permanent storage. The system described dynamically when required from a work store DASD storage pool shared by all operators. The amount of work store required by an operator during a session is dependent on the system functions being used. Permanent store space is allocated dynamically when required from a permanent store DASD storage pool shared by all permanent store documents. Amounts of permanent store are allocated on a best fit basis.
