It is desirable to have a keyboard technology which minimizes costs by minimizing the number of interconnections, electrical drive circuits, and sense circuits. A shift register technology is ideal for this purpose, having only a single interrogation input and sense output. If the information about the state of the keys is manifested by acoustic waves, then the information will appear sequentially at a sensor at a rate determined by the velocity of sound and the spacing of the keys.
