The present structure relates to a means for determining the direction of a ribbon drive in a bidirectional drive system by a mechanical memory device which retains the last drive direction while the machine is off. This avoids the possibility that a particular portion of the ribbon, particularly near a ribbon end, may be subjected to undue wear during repeated on/off cycles to thus cause premature ribbon deterioration.
