A logic system is provided which has hardware to support character lengths of n-bits and which uses a prefix character defined by n-bits to expand the capacity for character designation. This is interfaced with a system having the hardware to support character designations of n plus 1 or more bits. The interface also operates in the opposite sense, i.e., to interface words or characters expressed in hardware having character lengths of n plus 1 or more bits back to a system having the characters expressed in hardware of n-bits but using a prefix word or character.
