Registration Control For Multilayer Circuit Boards

In the manufacture of multilayer circuit boards, it is necessary to control the registration of drilled hole patterns to internal conductors. Good control is essential in high density boards to guarantee sufficient electrical clearance for acceptable field reliability. The technique described here, which is implementable in software, obtains this control by analysis of x-y location data on the conductor and hole patterns. Referring to the flow diagram. the procedure is as follows: 1) It is assumed that errors of location originate from certain known causes which are characteristic of the manufacturing process. Each cause generates a certain error with a particular mathematical description. Common error examples, e.g., systematic measurement errors, are accounted for in the analysis.
