Nondestructive Test For Determining Thickness of A Plated Layer
This technique permits the thickness of a gold layer deposited from a plating
solution to be measured without destruction of the layer.
A small amount of the radioisotope 195 Au (185 days half life) is added to an
aurous gold salt plating solution which will be used to deposit the gold layer on
the substrate. The gold layer is deposited on the substrate by conventional
techniques. The thickness of the plated layer is determined by measuring the
radioactivity of the layer that has been plated out with this solution. The
radioactivity is determined by autoradiography or by a suitable counter. After
calibration of the counter, the number of counts permits a quick nondestructive
measurement of the amount of gold deposited on the substrate or, alternatively
with the use of shields, on individual pads or an array of pads. The
disintegrations are preferably measured using a sodium iodide scintillation
counter. The amount of gold on an individual pad, such as an input or output
pad, or an array of micro-sockets can be determined by shielding off the radiation
from adjacent pads with suitable shields made of lead or the like.
