A type element 1 is made of an elastic material, such as plastic, in the shape of a cup provided with a slit 2 in spiral form and a plurality of type characters (e.g., 96 type characters) arranged along the slit. Any type character can be positioned opposite a print paper 3 by rotating the type element using a conventional character selection mechanism 4 for a spiral print head. After a desired type character has been positioned by the selection mechanism, a hammer unit 5 located at the inside of the type element is energized to strike the rear part of the type character against an ink ribbon 6 and the print paper 3.
