This article describes an optical or magnetic pulse generator often mounted on the shaft of a stepping motor to provide feedback pulses to a shaft position counter in order to provide shaft position feedback to step motor control logic. The phase relationship of the feedback emitter pulses to the step motor winding affects the speed that the motor will operate. If the motor is to operate at the same speed in both directions, the phase relationship of emitter pulses must be symmetrical with respect to the step pulses to the motor windings. This phase relationship adjustment of the feedback emitter is usually made with the aid of an oscilloscope.
