This article describes a method for attaching start/stop storage devices to a block (burst) multiplex channel/control unit interface, which interface otherwise asynchronously attaches a DASD (direct-access storage device) in a demand/response mode. The method comprises the step of selecting and connecting a start/stop device to the interface only in the absence of an eminent data transfer connection between a DASD and the interface. The eminence of data transfer may be accommodated by any form of logical sensing at the device level or logical sensing and inhibiting at the channel interface tag line level.
