A point-of-sale terminal (POST) system is described wherein point-of- sale data from a plurality of POSTS is stored on a common diskette in whatever sequence the data arrives and data on one point-of-sale transaction may be spread out in several places on the one diskette or even split between two diskettes. The program herein described provides for correct rebuilding of transactions even if two diskettes are submitted out of sequence. Transactions are written to a CPU's fixed disk with the individual items within a transaction chained together ("staged").
