A flat panel display device is made by abutting four rectangular chips, each consisting of a display element area 1 bounded on two sides by a driver area 2, so that each display element area 1 touches two other areas 1, as shown in Fig. 1. The chips are originally as shown in Fig. 2 with a central rectangular display element area 1 bounded on all four sides by a driver area 2. The drivers on opposite sides of the display element area are duplicated so that each display element address line has a driver at each end. Cuts are then made along the lines A-A or BB, and C-C or D-D to produce a chip with a vertical and horizontal set of drivers.
