A flat, narrow band ink ribbon 10 is pulled at a relatively constant speed from the exit port of a stuffer box 11 to travel between a fixed row of print hammers 12, print medium 13 and stationary platen 14 by a ribbon drive mechanism 15 located in the entry end of the stuffer box. Print medium 13 is periodically advanced after printing by one or more line spaces in a direction perpendicular to the direction of ribbon travel. Stationary guide 16 is located between the print mechanism and the entry of the stuffer box to provide correction for skewing and/or curling of the ribbon so that it is substantially flat when it enters the drive mechanism 15.
