Electrostatic Shielding For Magnetoresistive Read Heads
The arrangements shown in the figures provide electrostatic shielding for
magnetic read heads having magnetoresistive read elements.
The configuration shown in Fig. 1 comprises a chip 1 with a silicon cover
enclosed in plastic. A magnetoresistive read element 3 is provided at one end of
the chip and is connected to terminals 5, 7 and 9 by conductive elements 11 and
13 electrically separated by dielectric 15. Dielectric separators 17 and 19 also
electrically isolate the conductive paths 21 and 23. Points 5 and 7 are electrically
connected together and to one output lead 25, and point 9 is connected to output
The substrate and associated elements are ground to a predetermined
contour indicated by the dashed line 29. Prior to the grinding, resistance
measurements made between the leads 25 and 27 will be relatively low, as there
is a full conductive path existing between these leads because of the
uninterrupted conductive path between elements 21 and 23. As the grinding
progresses, the conductive connection between 21 and 23 will be obliterated and
the resistance between leads 25 and 27 will then be essentially that of the
magnetoresistive element 3.
Now referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the dielectric separator; 7 is
extended to the end of the substrate and that individual connections are made to
