A controlled rectifier 2 is mounted in a cooling device 3 that has a cooling water passage 4 formed in part by an outer wall 5. The cooling stud 6 of the rectifier is threaded into a copper part 7 for good thermal conduction between stud 6 and part 7, and part 7 is at the high electrical potential of the stud. The outer wall 5 and the cooling water are maintained at ground potential by an intervening insulating layer 8, and the insulating layer is protected from corrosion by an outer sleeve 9.
