A method and means for defining and invoking a cryptographic encoding/ decoding capability in a storage subsystem utilizing a fixed block extent architecture. The method comprises the steps of defining and transmitting cryptographic keys from a central processing unit (CPU) to a storage subsystem over one or more accessing channels, and associating a specific key with the data transfer requested by an accessing channel program.
