Color pictures may be produced on plain paper by superimposing images in primary colored inks. This technique is used to produce color hard copy from a color CRT display terminal fitted with a monochrome output printer. The terminal and printer attachment are controlled so that, in one mode of operation, the printer can be used conventionally to produce a monochrome copy of the colored image on display or, in another mode of operation, to produce a series of separate monochrome copies of the three primary components and, optionally, the black component which together form the color image. The monochrome images provide the masters for the subsequent transfer of the component colors onto plain paper.
