This article describes a technique for illumination together with electrical addressing schemes to obtain a high resolution, high contrast display, which also can be readily modified to incorporate color. The display is relatively inexpensive due to the simple elements and drive mechanisms involved in this approach. Also, the illumination system results in an ability to obtain a spatially compact display.
