Multi-Cartridge Sheet Feed And Delivery Apparatus
A light weight, modular sheet feed and delivery apparatus for attachment to
a printer is described.
As shown, at least two removable cassette-type hoppers 1 and 2 are
provided for containing differing types and/or sizes of sheets. Upon a signal from
the printer system control (not shown), one or the other of roll wave separator
wheels 3 and 4 is actuated. Sheets in the hopper are shingled and fed by
transport roller pairs 5 or 6 toward common channel 7 at the same rate as sheets
will move past the print head. Sensors 8 and 9 are positioned in the throats,
guiding sheets to the transport rollers 5 and 6 to detect the leading edge of a
sheet and to initiate a signal to deactivate the appropriate roll wave separator.
Sensor 10 detects the trailing edge of a sheet in feed channel 7. This event
must be detected prior to the development by the printer control system of a
signal, causing the reversal of platen 11 motion. Reversing platen 11 motion
causes the sheet to be driven to the right back through channel 7 and toward exit
rollers 13 and 14. Roller 14 is the driving force for delivering the sheet face down
into delivery tray 15.
Roll wave separator wheels 3 and 4 may be independently driven or may be
on a single power shaft. In either case control is such that only one at a time is
