The disclosed sheet feed apparatus uses a wave generator to produce reliable shingling of a stack of sheets, and provides a pick roll to feed the now-shingled top sheet away from the stack. As shown in Fig. 1, the wave generator comprises a free-rolling ball or roller 12 which is force-biased onto the top sheet of stack 10, for example, a stack of letter-size paper. This stack is supported on movable platform 11. The platform is spring-biased in an upward direction or supported by a closed-loop servomechanism, as represented by arrow F. When roller 12 is moved in direction 13, the roller rotates in direction 14, and progressively less sheet shingling is produced, as shown for sheets 15, 16 and 17.
