Control and status information is usually transferred in input/output (I/O) mode between Communication Controllers and the adapters connected to them through a series bus. That is, the adapter exchanges a set of information with the Central Control Unit (CCU) on an interrupt basis and then the Adapter concerned transfers one character in cycle-stealing mode. The whole process then needs to be repeated for each character to be transferred. Such a process is time consuming.
