Most of the present semiconductor storage devices of the bipolar transistor type have the disadvantage that they lose their information when the power supply is switched off or temporarily interrupted. In the standby mode of an array, the peripheral circuits still in operation are so many that battery operation of bipolar, in contrast to CMOS, arrays would require too high a battery current.
