Series regulators are often used for achieving precision voltage outputs in a power supply. Most practical devices for series regulation, such as transistors, have some insertion loss which represents a loss in efficiency, and this may be particularly aggravated in cases of low voltage outputs where the series regulator insertion loss is a substantial percentage of the nominal output voltage.
