A thin film head assembly is made by depositing thin film layers on a prepared substrate, such as silicon. The substrate has a ridge anisotropically etched into the surface, and the ridge is bounded by (111) crystallographic planes. The layers are deposited so that the head pole pieces are formed on the (111) crystal face at the end of the ridge. Excess pole tip material is removed to form the transducing gap.
