When machine operation is triggered or synchronized by a zero-crossing of the AC power supply, it may be beneficial to have a means for detecting the absence or loss of this signal so that the machine can be put into an appropriate safe mode. In a xerographic copier, for example, this might mean turning off the fuser or a corona or a motor.
