Abstract

System 10 (Fig. 1), shown in simplified symmetrical form for the sake of explanation, has a pair of circular planar members 11,12 having respective thermal coefficients of expansions alpha 1 and alpha 2, it being assumed by way of example that alpha 1 greater than alpha 2. Member 11 has a circular aperture, 13 and members 11 and 12 are affixed to each other about their circumferential periphery P. In accordance with Hookes Law, it can be shown that the stress gradient induced in system 10 causes the system 10 to have an effective thermal coefficient of expansion alpha eff not necessarily limited to the range alpha 1 - alpha 2.
