Abstract

In a data processing system, facilities for sustaining input and output operations are termed "channels", and facilities for sustaining a single input or output operation are characterized as a "subchannel" (for instance, refer to "IBM System/370 Principles of Operation", Manual GA 22-7000, page 188, fifth edition, August 1976). Subchannels may be assigned in a unique one to one correspondence with peripheral devices. In systems using this correspondence it is desirable to have a supervisory program capability for resetting individual subchannels and associated individual devices on a selective basis, whereby other subchannels and devices are not affected by recovery procedures undertaken relative to a particular subchannel and associated device.
