A variety of printer mechanisms and other similar kinds of input/output (I/O) gear may be utilized with microprocessor control in a multiprocessor system. Printer mechanisms, for example, possess a diverse selection of printing characteristics. Matrix printers, belt printers, electro-erosion printers and the like are all in common usage. These require different control parameters and operate at different speeds. The adapters which control these printer mechanisms all have unique ways of interfacing with the host microprocessor which is providing the data to the I/O device. These may be characterized as tightly coupled, loosely coupled or uniprocessor-based systems.
