Zero Insertion Force Socket Card Lock Protector
Zero insertion force (ZIF) sockets permit electrical connection to the top and
bottom of a circuit card in addition to the conventional front and back connections
of a standard rack and panel package.
The ZIF socket is generally provided with a cam or other mechanism which
forces opposing contacts in the socket apart, thus permitting insertion or removal
of the card without damage to the electrical contacts in the socket.
This article covers a protective device in the form of a metal
disc mounted on a cam and provided with a slot which is in alignment
with the cam open position of the socket. In this position, removal
and/or insertion of the card in a longitudinal direction is
permitted. In any other position, e.g., when the contacts are
closed, the metal disc prevents insertion of the card or removal in
view of its interlock with a slot formed in the card. The jack
screws are used to insert and remove the card in a controlled manner.
An Allen wrench inserted through an access hole in the card support
is used to actuate the cam to the open or locked position when
appropriate, that is, prior to removal or after insertion.
