It is common for buffers to be used for temporarily holding data during a data transfer operation between main storage in a computer system and a high speed input/output device, such as a disk storage drive. In many instances it is desirable to have only partial buffering; however, this requires circuitry for controlling buffer loading, buffer unloading and overrun detection. In the present arrangement, common circuitry is used for controlling buffer loading and unloading and overrun detection.
