Self Loading Slider

A self-loading magnetic head slider 1 whose air bearing surface is shaped to generate both positive and sub-ambient pressures incorporates an orifice 2 which connects a volume 4 to the sub-ambient pressure zone 3. With the slider in contact with a magnetic disk prior to take-off, as the disk begins to rotate, the formation of the sub-ambient pressure will be delayed so that it lags behind the build-up of the positive pressure. This will result in quick slider lift-off from the disk, and in this way contact between the slider and disk will be minimized during start-up cycles.
