The surface development of magnetic patterns on recording media provides a means for optically studying the recording mechanism. Although a diluted, water-based, magnetic ink seemed a natural candidate for making the recording patterns visible, it initially produced a blurred and smeared image. However, a formulation was developed which caused the treated ink to produce a thin, uniform, smear-free coating over a sharply defined magnetic image.
