Tanks in which volatile chemicals are stored lose vapor to the atmosphere through tank-breathing (due to external temperature changes) and tank-working (pumping the chemical in or out). Although losses can be reduced by conservation valves, recovery devices on tank vents are often required for safety or pollution control. Some of these devices cool and condense the vaporized chemical for return to the storage tank instead of release to the atmosphere.
