The mercury-in-glass thermometer has long been a standard of simplicity, accuracy, reliability and economy in direct temperature measurement. Mercury, encapsulated within a glass bulb, expands within a capillary in proportion to an increase in temperature, providing a visual indication of the measured temperature on the calibrated glass stem.
