This article describes a modular printer station which is removable, self-contained and movable back and forth along the line of travel of a single movable print head on the bed of the overall printer apparatus. Each station incorporates a platen and an appropriate media drive system together with the supply for the media, where appropriate. Each station is independent of the print head transport and need only be provided with electrical power and suitable timing and controls for advancing the media. By placing the platen on the independent print station and making the entire assembly movable in the vertical direction back and forth above the print head between an open and closed position, easy replacement of media and inspection for the condition of the print head, clearing of jams, etc., is easily accommodated.
