Abstract

The force constant linearity of a voice coil motor can be improved by several techniques, as shown in the above drawing. The force constant of a voice coil linear motor is represented by a line on a graph having force as the ordinate and the position of the coil in the gap as the abscissa. The slope of that line is defined as the force constant and the current is assumed to be of a constant value and independent of the position of the coil in the gap. If the slope were a horizontal line, the actuator would have a truly linear force constant. The design objective is to obtain the best combination of slopes for movement in both directions, and can be achieved by the techniques shown.
