In magnetic disk storage files which employ concentric recording tracks, an index byte is employed to designate the beginning of such tracks. Where the magnetic head is selectively moved relative to these concentric tracks by a position control system, the file also employs prerecorded servo tracks which provide position information to control the movement of the head during both a seek operation and a track-following operation. An "index byte" has been provided in prior disk files by merely omitting one or more bytes of the servo pattern. Since other control data, such as AGC information and clocking information, is also derived from the servo pattern, the absence of such data in the servo pattern could adversely affect the derivation of this other control information.
