This article describes a method for dynamic real-time control of the amount of data transferred by Fixed Block Locate/Read or Locate/Write command pair, the method being applied to an asynchronous demand/response channel/control unit interface utilizing an architecture in which the extent of a data transfer across the interface is defined prior to transfer execution by a first channel command word (CCW). The method prematurely terminates a data transfer across the interface without invoking extra clocking or padding by modifying the control unit response through a designated bit value in a first CCW which inhibits clocking or padding.
