Visual Display Units (VDUs) are required which can handle both left to right (LTOR) Latin languages and right to left (RTOL) languages such as Hebrew, Arabic and Farsi and mixtures of these language types. Two functions are provided, switchable orientation which enables the display to be switched to LTOR or RTOL and a reverse key which enables data entry in a direction reverse to the current orientation. This article is concerned with the microcode steps required to retain the current status when switching between orientations.
