The use of a running discharge along the surfaces of an evacuated channel or the discharge of a gas in a channel to produce a plasma is well known (1,2). The lengths of these channels are limited by the breakdown voltage. It has been found that when a conical cathode electrode is employed the length of the channel can be increased without increasing the breakdown voltage.
