An encoder wheel has a number of windows or openings, as shown in Fig. 1. An optical sensor can be used to detect the angular motion of the encoder wheel as the windows pass through the light beam of the sensor. The constant speed output of one sensor would be a series of high and low voltage levels corresponding to the windows and solid portions of the encoder wheel.
