Automated Multiple Head Disk Testing Machine
Magnetic disks are tested in a use-approximating environment. Principally,
this consists of writing/reading/erasing all data tracks with the disk in a dummy
cartridge  similar to its actual-use envelope.
The machine which has been designed to automate and speed up
this testing is based largely on standard IBM parts. Its principal
assembly 10 (Fig. 1) consists of six write/read/erase heads (not
visible) mounted on three carriages 11 such that the heads can
traverse both working surfaces of the disk at the same time, three
heads being on each side of the disk. Each carriage is driven
radially across one-third of the disk via band 12 and idler pulley 13
(Fig. 1) connected to stepping motor 14 (Fig. 2). Thus, a disk can
be tested in about one-sixth of the time required by one head alone.
The carriages can be moved synchronously or independently.
Vertical plate 15, which serves as the foundation for testing assembly 10, is
built up of several layers for ease of machining. It is mounted on slides 16 within
a table-height console and may be drawn out for servicing. Disk drive motor 17
and spindle 18 are also mounted on this plate. During operation, plate 15 is
affixed to horizontal base plate 19 of picker assembly 20 (Fig. 2).
