Various semi-automatic paper insertion techniques for typewriters have been proposed that involve operator manipulation of the keyboard to specify a first line distance. One problem results with such an approach because the operator's hands are not free to engage the keyboard at the start of a paper-insertion operation. Rather, the operator must hold the paper in the entry opening so as to be against the platen as paper insertion begins.
